A beautiful renaissance garden was laid out around the castle in 1850 with 2000 roses blossoming.

The castle has been an inspiration for several Norwegian artists, among others Henrik Ibsen and Edvard Grieg. Rosendal is considered to be the most beautiful part of the Hardangerfjord.
